“When I was little I watched Pocahontas religiously. Most of my friends thought the love story was cute. But I could never get past how horrible the white people treated the natives. I grew up to find out I was native, and that my people were treated that way in real life. Pocahontas fueled my passion that I now have for my Indigenous Studies program and my passion for indigenous social justice”
Is it bad that all my submissions to this blog are about Pocahontas. I don’t even think I payed attention during other movies as a child.
you missed us dramatically singing Pocahontas during tinychat last night. i will forever have a deep and complicated relationship with that movie.
ah! the things i miss out on.
When I was a kid, I memorized all the words to every song on that damned movie soundtrack (minus that savages one… thank goodness) and taught all the kids on the play ground those songs. I held classes under the play equipment and everything.
I’ll repeat Jal in saying “i will forever have a deep and complicated relationship with that movie.”
it’s a deeply racist movie, but it’s literally all I had when I was little to relate to.
